Having worked throughout 2014 to bring out a series of brilliant preview singles, Nuborg (the project of a songwriter from Norway called Gunhild Nyborg) has started 2015 with the final collection of tracks. Here’s the title track – hit play before you continue reading:
As you can see, this is understated, contemplative and high quality music with a unique production approach. It’s not bombastic or in your face, but gradually grows into something genuinely epic and beautiful. This is something you could have said about any of the singles from last year, but as a full package of nine songs the effect is even bigger.
Not all the songs are as ominous as the above, and there are many lighter moments to provide contrast. It makes for a fully rounded album of ambient sound – there may not be a lot of pace to many of the songs, but this is music for the patient, and it will grow on you quicker that you expect.
One of the most intriguing acts we have come across this year, Nuborg is back again after a short break with new single ‘One Day’. It’s just the latest in a string of singles that have stretched throughout 2014 so far, and there’s an album collecting them all together out soon – though the date is yet to be announced. Keep an eye on her homepage for more information if this one intrigues you as much as it does us.
With a Kate Bush (topical) like vocal, this is perhaps her most affecting single since ‘Sliding off the Edge of the World’ – sultry, dangerous, and with a killer ending.Enjoy this – songwriting this thoughtful and detailed doesn’t come along every day.
As the lyrics say, ‘Inanna’ sees Norwegian singer-songwriter NuBorg ‘exploring the dark side’. The construction of the staccato vocal melody over the humming, simple chord pattern makes for an excellent combination, creating a deliciously dark atmosphere which is easy to enjoy.
The single, the latest in NuBorg’s monthly single release schedule which will see a new song born on the 15th of each month, is another about turn to the realm of ambient pop after last month’s ‘You You’ was more commercial. The previous month’s ‘Sliding Off the Edge of the World’ shares more DNA with this latest, and it will once again be very interesting to see where NuBorg goes from here, with only two months of this excellent project left.
A follow up to the recent ‘Sliding Off the Edge of the World‘, ‘You You’ is another brand new single from NuBorg. With a more acoustic-pop infused sound, the atmospherics of her previous single have been left behind for something all the more radio-friendly:
The ‘poppiness’ however doesn’t make for a dip in quality, as the lyrics about appreciating your own inner beauty in the face of insecurities really do hit home. We’ve been promised a return to the more atmospheric likes of her previous single, but in the meantime this is another very pleasant stop on NuBorg’s journey.
You can buy the single here.
Haunting and atmospheric, ‘Sliding Off the Edge of the World’ is the latest track from NuBorg – a Norwegian singer who is releasing her album as a monthly collection of singles until the full compliment is available in August.
Sitting on top an effective bass melody and understated orchestration, the song displays a really strong vocal from NuBorg – this is the first I’d heard of the monthly single project, but I can highly recommend listening back to previous tracks on the YouTube page too.
