A slick pop single with a valuable message about self-worth, ‘Naked’ is the new track from US artist Brielle Von Hugel. Those who are familiar with American Idol may remember Von Hugel for her recent run to the semi-finals of the show, but now she has taken the independent record label route to start her solo career.
Of course, the exposure she got from the show won’t hurt with her bid to break through in a tough industry. However, those who are sniffy about her reality show beginnings should take a moment to really appreciate the quality of her voice. This is a real talent, and no mistake.
A singer-songwriter with a knack for writing lyrics that you can easily relate to, Luke Potter is a primarily acoustic artist who is currently picking up a lot of traction in certain circles. After the recent release of single ‘All The Same’, Potter has wasted no time in following up with new track ‘Something More’.
Mellow and thoughtful, ‘Something More’ is a tale full of watery imagery – as indicated by the themes throughout the video. It calls to mind some of the slower songs of Ed Sheeran, putting together a laid back guitar line with his smooth, light vocal. If you like what you hear, you can find it now on iTunes.
A trio of talented musicians from the UK, Magazine Gap are a band who have been on the radar a lot recently. In recent months, they have released videos one by one for tracks from their excellent upcoming EP ‘Calling Card’, and finally it’s time for the title track itself to see the light of day.
Continuing the pattern from their previous tracks, the song benefits from adding strong funk and soul influences to the pop structures. Full of neat stabs, technical licks and fine musical touches, the song displays the talent of the players while never forgetting it needs to find an audience. Therefore, what could have turned into talented but troublesome noodling is moulded into a catchy, upbeat pop-funk tune. Roll on the EP – http://magazinegap.com/
Out now on iTunes, ‘Clocks’ is the brand new EP from a very promising new artist in the shape of songwriter Ellie Jane. Released on October 21st, the EP comprises six tracks of really good acoustic pop, fronted by a voice that is delicate but simultaneously powerful.
The intelligence of Jane’s lyricism shines through from beginning to end, and can be sampled in the title track above. And, having already turned heads at Radio 1, there will be plenty more new music on the way. To get on board the hype train, head over to her website.
Out now on iTunes, ‘Future Back’ is the captivating new single from Astronauts of Antiquity. A group who experiment with the boundaries of pop and electronica, they once again find themselves on great form with this new release.
Having gained a following thanks to features with a number of huge outlets, the band seem to go from strength to strength with each new single release, and ‘Future Back’ is no exception. It’s helped too by the charming lo-fi video that accompanies it, capturing the spirit and message of the song very well indeed.
If you like it as much as we do, you can get all the gossip on their upcoming new EP here.
A country-folk song in the grand tradition of great break-up tunes, ‘You’ is the title track from the brand new Angie and the Deserters EP. Accompanied by the melancholic but compelling video above, the song is something of a slow burner, but infused with lyrical feeling throughout.
Carried by the vocal of the eponymous Angie, the song does a great job of describing fresh heartache. It’s a premise well covered in the genre, yet Angie and the Deserters somehow make it feel fresh. If this is an indication of what to expect from the EP as a whole, it’s an easy one to recommend.
At just 20 years of age, Max Restaino has been in and around the music scene for many years already – appearing on the BBC’s Look North Sofa as young as nine years old, displaying his multi-instrumental talents. Since those days, the young man has come a long way and celebrates two big events in his career this month.
On October 21st, Restaino’s new album ‘The Time It Takes’ is released ahead of a huge national tour supporting Rebecca Ferguson, marking the next huge step in a very promising career.
He specialises in a catchy brand of independent pop, as evidenced by single ‘No’ (above) and the album preview, new on YouTube today (below).
Magazine Gap are having a busy year, with an EP on the way and a previous single ‘What’s That About?’ getting plenty of attention. Their latest single, ‘Body Language’ is another step on a very promising journey, available now for free download from Soundcloud.
Starting with a great opening that lays the funky groundwork as soon as it hits, this track is built around a simply lovely groove, performed by and group who are clearly on their game and know what they’re going for. It’s a well-produced brand of pop-rock, feeding off the current trend for adding in funk tropes to dance-floor friendly effect.
He’s been writing songs at quite a rate of knots for some time now, and this Friday (September 16th) sees the return of the excellent Dale McKay with his new four track EP ‘Here and Now’.
A specialist in smooth, classy, original pop, McKay has been working hard to turn out high quality music and win new fans, with this latest release set to win over even more. His sound is typified by ‘Make You Happy’, the track above, which shows that he has a way with words and knows how to make an impactful chorus work.
If the EP is well received, hopefully there will be more on the way soon too, because fresh original pop music is hard to come by these days!
Available now on iTunes, Tom Jarvis has released his new double single pulling together two excellent tracks in ‘Wonder of Time’ (above) and ‘Ordinary Lie’. Revelling in a distinct pop style with driving, rocky overtones, Jarvis is one of a number of upcoming pop artists receiving full backing from BBC introducing on both a national and local level.
His previous EP ‘Make Your Own Luck’ was aptly titled, with enough quality to win him over many new fans and score him high profile supporting gigs with the likes of Example and Scouting for Girls. And now, with new material on the way, this new single does a great job of keeping up that momentum.
