Rachel Alice Johnson leads out ‘2am’ EP with single ‘Lights On’

When a song reminds you by turns of Adele and early 90s U2, then it’s usually a sign that the writer has done an excellent job of blending genres to create something new. With a vocal that channels the depth of the former, and a bass line which is very reminiscent of the latter, Rachel Alice Johnson seems to have done just that.

‘Lights On’ is not only the first single from her new EP ‘2am’, it’s also the opening track. It’s easy to see why thanks to its powerful mid-tempo and provocative lyrics. The rest of the EP continues in this vein, marking Rachel Alice Johnson out as a head turner in several different ways. The single and EP are both on iTunes now.

Ed Accura new single ‘Bear a Witness’

A UK rapper, songwriter and producer with a career spanning back into the 90s, Ed Accura is an artist with a wide-ranging background. Starting out in the midst of an underground jazz funk boom, he later moved across into the world of hip hop, with new single ‘Bear a Witness’ the latest example of his work.

Having been a member of a number of collectives, Accura is now working alone to write infectious, intelligent hip hop with an accessible edge. Written to draw attention to the plight of London’s homeless – trying to make ends meet in the freezing winter months – ‘Bear a Witness’ manages to walk that tightrope that allows it to be a worth track without being overly earnest.

Pop ballad ‘Grow’ out now from Amanda St John

Available now on iTunes, the new single from Amanda St John is the title track from recent album ‘Grow’. A well executed power ballad from the top drawer, it’s a great demonstration of the Northern Ireland born artist’s talents.

Her powerful vocal shines throughout, given plenty of room to breathe by the slow tempo and smart, subtle production. If it whets the appetite, you can also find the full album on iTunes at the link above.

New EP from Spencer Robinson, ‘Standing at the Edge of the World’

When the first two tracks from an alt-folk EP are titled ‘Standing at the End of the World’ and ‘Say Hello to the Devil’, I think it’s fair to say that the stage is set in terms of tone. Thankfully, in the case of Spencer Robinson’s new EP, those titles aren’t a sign of a dreary, miserable collection of folk, but simply an indicator of mood.

This is a sly, downbeat release with shadowy themes throughout, dealing with hard truths in a world which is struggling with hard times. It could be argued, perhaps, that with the current political climate the music industry should serve as an upbeat distraction. However, with songs this well written, you won’t mind being turned towards the dark side. You can see for yourself at the link above, where you can sample the full five tracks before downloading them for yourself from iTunes.

New single from Jonathan Cavier, ‘Comes a Moment’, out now

A singer-songwriter from the US, Jonathan Cavier is a veteran musician with many years of experience in the music business. This may explain why his new single, ‘Comes a Moment’, is a mature piece of acoustic pop songwriting with top class production value.

Clean, crisp and catchy, the track is on iTunes now, and can also be found as part of Cavier’s excellent album ‘Premier’. For fans of well exectuted, thoughtful pop, this single and album should represent the discovery of a new favourite.
