SHEENA MCHUGH – THE VOICE

26-year-old Sheena McHugh reached the Open Mic UK Grand Final in 2011 reaching the Top 3 for her age category. After her Open Mic UK success she went on to take part in The X Factor in 2013, where she made it through to Bootcamp but was then unfortunately sent home by mentor Nicole Scherzinger.

X Factor’s loss is now The Voice’s gain as Sheena McHugh wowed the coaches at the Blind Auditions with her cover of Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home”, scoring four turns from all of the coaches. With the pick of the lot Sheena choose Will.i.am to mentor her in The Voice.

Sheena McHugh has now made it through to the live quarter-finals of The Voice after securing a spot in coach Will.i.am’s final three. Her amazing rendition of ‘Bring Me to Life’ by Evanescence at the Battles left Will.i.am no choice but to take her through to the next stage.

At the live quarter-finals it will be down to the public vote to keep her in the competition. We’re sure she’ll blow the crowd away again and we wish her the best of luck!

Tom Ryder with heartfelt new single ‘Silence Breaking Through Sound’

Heartfelt and raw, ‘Silence Breaking Through Sound’ is a new single from Tom Ryder bring released in support of the Macmillan Cancer Support organisation. Set for release on April 19th, the acoustic single is written from painful personal experience when two family members of Tom Ryder were diagnosed with cancer within a short period of time.

The song, feeding from the feeling of something being beyond your control, is a testament to the hard work put in by charities like Macmillan, and Tom Ryder obviously sees this single as a chance to offer something back.

It helps that it’s a fantastic tune too, well worth a copy in support of a good cause once it’s unveiled on April 19th.

EMMANUEL NWAMADI – THE VOICE

Emmanuel Nwamadi took part in Open Mic UK in 2013 within the group Vintage Soul. Their original song named “Six” impressed the music industry judges at the Regional Final in Camden and took them through to the Area Finals.

Watch Emmanuel Nwamadi’s Open Mic UK Regional Final performance here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH739vb1zUA

The Open Mic UK judges’ feedback from Vintage Souls’ Area Final performance was; “You were lovely on the ear and the boy’s musical work was seemingly effortless and built a strong sound. However, the musicians felt like they were support as opposed to being a group. You all need to perform more.”

SUCCESS FOR EMMANUEL NWAMADI

23-year-old Emmanuel Nwamadi worked his vocal magic at The Voice’s Blind Auditions performing a soulful version of Sade’s “Sweetest Taboo”. He secured a place in the Battles with Ricky Wilson who turned his chair for him.

Emmanuel Nwamadi has now made it through to the live quarter-finals of The Voice after securing a spot in coach Ricky Wilson’s final three. Emmanuel impressed Ricky Wilson with his own rendition of Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” at the Battles.

Ricky Wilson said: “We’re not looking for something that’s already represented in the charts or on the radio, I’m looking for the next thing and I think Emmanuel’s got something interesting and unique. He’s a man of few words and he’s a man of very deep words when he does speak. I think he could sing pretty much anything and put his twist on it.”

At the live quarter-finals it will be down to the public vote to keep Emmanuel Nwamadi in the competition. We look forward to seeing him in the live shows and wish him the best of luck!

The Lowriders – excellent self-titled album out now

They made a splash with last year’s EP ‘I Am Soldier’, and now they’re back. Our favourite Essex based indie-rock proposition have returned with a new self-titled album and it’s every bit as good as you would expect.

It’s not often that this genre is described as soulful, but that is exactly the word that comes to mind when it comes to the Lowriders. You get the feeling that this is music that is meticulously crafted, but then recorded in order to sound spontaneous and raw. The ramshackle nature of tracks like ‘Don’t Drink the Poison’ is a case in point, all shifting soundscapes and tempos, with plenty of ideas thrown in for good measure, but it takes real attention to detail to lay something out this carefully.

It’s this depth that’s in evidence across the board, and with any luck one or two examples of it will be publically available to stream soon so music fans can begin to appreciate how good these Essex lads are. The only available album track to hear at the moment just so happens to be the title track to their last EP. Enjoy:

Narrow Plains single ‘So Rewind’ out now

A follow up to an EP that was a success in its own right (‘Somewhere In Between’ which is still available), ‘So Rewind’ is the excellent new single from folk-pop specialists Narrow Plains.

A trio of very talented musicians, their sound fits perfectly into the nu-folk genre that’s so popular at the moment thanks to artists such as Laura Marling and others of that ilk. The track above is a single that could be a huge splash if it came from a better known source, but Narrow Plains aren’t afraid to work their way to the top the hard way – producing consistent, good music that will find a following.

Based in London, the band have played at some of the city’s top venues and further afield too. Winning new fans as they go. And if you’re anything like me, and you’ve listened to the track above, then you’ll be a new fan too.

Video feature: Bias Firey cover Lana Del Rey’s ‘Video Games’

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Lana Del Rey’s atmospheric pop was converted to a different sound? Namely, equally atmospheric alt-rock?

Well, thanks to Edinburgh based independent band BiasFirey, you no longer have to. Having recently released their last album ‘Hundred Thousand Souls’ and follow up singles, BiasFirey are now in writing mode, getting ready for new original material which will build on their growing fanbase and established moody sound.

However, in the absence of new original material, they have flexed their creative muscles with a new version of fantastic pop tune ‘Video Games’. Bridging the gap by being both a faithful adaptation and a new direction for those with rockier tastes, this is a nice way to whet the appetite for more original tracks going forward.
